Pioneer Day

8 - 11 - 14 - 15 - 22   September

Pioneer Day is a proposal that draws inspiration from the focus of Landscape Festival are organized in collaboration with the Bergamo Tourist Guides Association and combines nature and architecture intertwining them along beautiful routes skilfully told by city guides.

To know means to experiment, to make one’s own through the experience. With this thought in mind, the Botanical Garden has developed two workshops, dedicated to the knowledge of pioneer plants and to land art, that complement each other.

Thuesday 11 september

Where history narrates the landscape
from 10.00 am to 04.00 pm
Meeting point: Largo Colle Aperto, next to the newsagent’s

A day in Astino immersed in the green hills of Bergamo, talking about Biodiversity and Agrobiodiversity.

In the enchanting landscape of the Colli di Bergamo, the Astino Valley opens out: a favourite place for landscape lovers for the sensation of peace and quiet that it inspires. Taking a stroll in the Astino Valley is a great opportunity to walk among the over 1,000 varieties of plants present in the Astino section of the Botanical Garden, as well as a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the history of the Monastery and its church.
For the Expo 2015, the complex was renovated to become a place to live and visit: in recent years it has been home to numerous events, exhibitions and initiatives related to the theme of food, wine and nutrition in general. It is in this context that the proposal of Tosca Rossi, art historian and researcher, has been inserted. Tosca Rossi will meet up with the participants at Largo Colle Aperto, and proceed along via Sudorno and so to Astino. After visiting the complex and stopping for a packed lunch in the valley of Biodiversity, the tour will continue along via del Celtro, via San Matteo alla Benaglia, via Generale Marieni, San Sebastiano and then by way of via San Vigilio will return to Colle Aperto.

Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 september

Walking tour with experiential activities including History, Art and Landscape
from 10.00 am to 05.00 pm
Meeting point: Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe

The proposed route starts in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, where the guide will talk about the main stages and characteristics of the transformation of Bergamo into a fortress city, to defend the Venetian territory and trade in the second half of the 16th century. The walk will proceed along via San Giacomo to reach the imposing structure of the walls, a work of defence that has become the ideal house for home to many plants and animals: the particular microclimate sees the presence of specimens typical of the Mediterranean flora.
Continuing along via San Lorenzino towards the Colle di Rosate, through silent streets to the southern portal of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. From here on to the medieval square, to admire the important religious and historical buildings of the city.
The visit ends in Piazza Vecchia, the Renaissance square flanked by the 12th-Century Palazzo della Ragione, the Torre Civica and the Palazzo Nuovo, to enjoy the instalment designed by Luciano Giubbilei for the Ninth Edition of the Landscape Festival – I Maestri del Paesaggio.

At the end of the tour, after lunch, the guides of the Botanical Garden propose an interactive route to discover the pioneer plants and their adaptive strategies. A proposal that, in in keeping with the objectives of the Botanical Garden, aims to bring people closer to the natural environment in an authentic relationship based on an experiential approach that leads to knowledge: learning by doing.
